Marcus Messner (Logan Lerman) is the only son of Jewish parents - Dad (Danny Burstein), a kosher butcher and Mom (Linda Emond) living in Newark, New Jersey. They are relieved that Marcus has received a scholarship to college, even if it is in Ohio, because the Korean War is raging and many of their friend's children are being killed overseas. Marcus is beginning to feel smothered by his parents and is excited to be heading off to college and freedom. Of course, college turns out to be a small, conservative university with mandatory chapel and a strict moral code. He devotes himself to his studies and his job in the library. Everything changes when Marcus meets Olivia Hutton (Sarah Gaddon) a troubled girl with a questionable past.

I really liked this movie. I thought they did an excellent job with this period piece. It had the look and feel of the 1950's and Marcus' conflict with his burgeoning sexuality and his strict moral code was well depicted. I thought all of the actors did a fine job. This was Logan Lerman's finest performance to date. He was equally brilliant and naive. When he is called to meet with the Dean (Tracy Letts), their verbal sparring is some of the best debating you will ever see on the screen. Both are very skilled with the wordplay. And, when his Mother comes for a visit, their scene is truly heart-wrenching. A very good movie. Based on Philip Roth's novel of the same name, it is well worth the price of admission. Go see it.
