Rums 120 minutes

They're back! It's 20 years since the aliens were defeated and President Lanford (Sela Ward) is holding a recognition ceremony for all of the heroes. Only the aliens have chosen the anniversary to make their return. The captive aliens from 20 years ago are acting up, former President Whitmore (Bill Pullman) has gone off his rocker and Dr. Okun (Brent Spiner) - who has been in a coma for 20 years - suddenly reawakens. Something is up. Dr. Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) is still researching the alien invasion and Catherine Marceaux (Charlotte Gainsbourg) is still tryng to understand the pysche of the people affected by the original alien invasion. They meet in Africa when suddenly they are called up because of the new invasion. Together with a new crop of young Air Force Pilots headed by Dylan Hiller (Jesse T. Usher) (Will Smith's son from the original), they try to gain the upper hand on the aliens again. This time the entire world is at risk and there is only a limited amount of time before the aliens drill into the Earth's core and end civilization. Can the aliens be defeated before it is too late?

This movie is a cheesefest. It is fun and action-packed but also a little lame. Almost everyone is back from the original. Sela Ward is now President but she has the lamest lines of all. Bill Pullman is back but he is off his rocker. Once he cleans up, he still looks pretty good but he also has lame lines. The plot is a little weak but the special effects are really good. This is a summer popcorn movie to the fullest extent. It is not terrible. It is just an average summer blockbuster. There were plenty of people at the 9:30 AM showing so I'm betting that it does okay at the box office. It just isn't great. No clapping at the end like that original. **SPOILER**  - It feels a little flat when the aliens are finally defeated. However, the ending paves the way for Independence Day 3: Interstellar or something like that. I guess it depends how well this one does. OK for the whole family. Just an average summer movie. If you loved the first one, you will probably like this one.
