Runs 101 minutes
Ricky (Julian Dennison) is a foster kid, considered a difficult placement due to his penchant for telling lies, painting graffitti, starting fires and eating too much, according to his caseworker Paula (Rachel House). Bella (Rima Te Wiata) and Hector (Sam Neill) have agreed to take him in. At first, Ricky is very hesitant but soon Bella wins him over with food, a hot water bottle for his bed and his very own dog which he names Tupac (Tupac is a famous Rapper and his best firend - ha!). When tragedy strikes, Ricky, Tupac and Uncle Hector must go on the run in the wild New Zealand Bush. With the law, Ricky's caseworker and some crazy locals hot on their heels, Hec and Ricky bond over hunting, fishing and living in the wild.
This is one of my favorite movies so far this summer. It is adorable. While it does have some serious undertones, the whole movie is directed with a light approach. Julian Dennison who plays Ricky is fantastic. He is the perfect mix of sad and deadpan funny. Sam Neill gives a gruff and steely performance, with a soft heart at the center. The Bush is beautiful and majestic and still very wild. All of the other characters provide a wacky balance, that keeps the film moving and light. It is funny and touching, harsh and beautiful. And, ultimately uplifting. One of my favorites. Go see it.
