Aaron Paul is Hollis, a still grieving father of two boys, Jacob and Wes. His wife has passed away recently and he has become isolated and distant, ignoring his young sons. Meanwhile, Jacob, the older son is 13 and heading for big trouble. He is getting into fights and hanging with a group of young juvenile delinquents. In fact, the movie starts off with him getting put on probation. Wes is 10. He looks up to his older brother and wants to be included in everything he does. This puts him in some bad situations. Eventually, CPS takes Wes away from Hollis and he goes to live with his aunt Pam (Juliette Lewis). She understands Hollis' grief because Hollis' wife was her sister and she is there for them. But, she can only do so much and must follow the court's decision for now. Hollis starts to turn the corner just when losing Wes causes Jacob to go over the edge. Will the family be reunited before Jacob does something he can't take back?
This is a small film made in Texas. The cast is fine. The story builds slowly and you never really learn what happened in the distant past. You just see the aftermath and the effects it has on this family. It is a dark look at what tears families apart and sets kids up for failure. You are pulling for Hollis to wake up before it is too late. Worth a look.
