This film is based on the true story of a working class bouncer who is hired to be the driver for a black musician as he sets off on a tour of the segregated south in the 1960's. Viggo Mortensen is Tony Lip, an Italian-American working class bouncer. When the club he works at is closed for a remodel he is at loose ends. He is hired by Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a classical pianist, to drive him as he tours with a musical trio through the American South. Tony is coarse and uneducated. Don is refined and dignified. These two couldn't be more different. But, as they travel together (using the "Green Book" to help find hotels and other places that would cater to African Americans), they grow to respect and admire each other. This turns into a lifetime friendship.

This is a great film! It is endearing and heart-warming and very funny. Viggo Mortensen is not the first actor you would choose to play "funny" but he is fantastic. He packed on a few pounds and turned up the accent for this role. And, Mahershala Ali is excellent as the impressive and serious Dr. Don Shirley. He is almost prissy, but he is also human and he really makes you feel for him. It is difficult seeing a segregated America depicted in this film. It is hard to believe the country was really that way but it is nice to see Tony as he overcomes his initial prejudices, too. The Husband and I both loved this film. Highly recommend it. Go see it!
