John Travolta plays John Gotti, the Dapper Don/Teflon Don, head of the Gambino crime family and one of the most well-known crime bosses in America. He lived large, never hiding from what he was. This film is an inside look at the Gotti family, from his wife Victoria (Kelly Preston - John Travolta's wife in real life- nice casting) and his five children to all of his associates, especially Sammy "the Bull" Gravano (William DeMeo), the man responsible for Gotti's ultimate downfall. It even delves into John Gotti, Jr.'s (Spencer Lofranco) initiation into the family business and his ultimate decision to leave it all behind. This was a world of crime and punishment and betrayal and revenge. And, ultimately about family.

The Husband and I were interested in seeing this film because we lived in the area when all of this was happening. We saw the riots and the signs on the establishments on Mulberry street in support of John Gotti. It was an interesting time. And, this is an interesting film. It isn't great - it has flaws but we liked it. There are a lot of characters and even though the names are flashed on the screen, it is hard to keep up with who is who. The film covers a large amount of time very quickly. But, John Travolta is a master. He can play dapper and smug with the best of them. He is worth the price of admission. And, Kelly Preston was pretty good, too. The guy that played John Gotti, Jr. was a little weak. He looked like a little pretty boy, not the heir to a crime family. But, if you are interested in John Gotti and you like John Travolta, then you will probably like this film. So, maybe read up on Gotti a little, then go see it.
