Gabrielle (Marion Cotillard) is a young woman with dreams of love and passion. Her parents think she is a little mad and arrange to marry her off to Jose (Alex Brendemuhl), a handsome and devoted Spanish laborer. She agrees to marry him but claims she will never love him. Soon, they are living in the countryside and running their business when she is diagnosed with "stones" disease and sent to the Alps for a cure. At the Spa, she meets Andre Sauvage (Louis Garrel), an army Lieutenant who had served in Indochinese War now suffering from kidney failure. She begins to fall for this dashing army veteran, who ignites all of her repressed passion. When Gabrielle's cure is complete, she is forced to return back to her husband. She and Andre vow to be togther in the future when the time is right. Will Gabrielle be reunited with her Army Vet or will she realize what she has had with Jose all along?
I really liked this movie. I didn't know anything about it before I watched it. Marion Cotillard is so good. She is daring, strong and vulnerable all at once. You can relate to her when she is forced to marry a man she barely knows. And, you can feel her passion when she meets a man she thinks is the man of her dreams. I thought all of the acting was strong. And, I really liked the way the film wrapped up. A little differently than I was expecting, that's for sure. A nice little film. If you like Marion Cotillard and indie films with nice little surprises, then this might be for you. Go see it.
