Maddy Whittier (Amandla Stenberg) is about to turn 18 and all she really wants is to visit the ocean. You see, she suffers from SCID, severe combined immunodeficiency, and she has not been outside since she was a chid because any normal bacteria or contagion could make her very sick. When a new boy named Olly (Nick Robinson) moves in next door, they begin a relationship via phone and notes pressed up to the window. Soon, she is disobeying her mother (Anika Noni Rose) and inviting Olly over during the day. When her mother finds out, she forbids Maddie from seeing Olly. This only leads her to push the boundaries even more. Maddie decides that never leaving the house is not really living and she and Olly decide to see just how sick she really is. Can young love overcome such big obstacles?

Ok. This is a cute movie. Amandla and Nick are both attractive and endearing actors. I love how Maddy wears white clothes all of the time - to reflect how clean and pure she is, I guess. The teen romance is believable but Maddie is very reserved and accepting of her disease until all of a sudden she isn't. I'm not sure I would have lasted until I was 18 to test my boundaries. If you have read the book, then you know where this is headed. If not, there is a nice twist at the end. Fine for all age groups, but will mostly appeal to young teen girls. Overall, it is an ok movie but just kind of bland. Maybe good for a matinee.
