Fred (Christopher Plummer) is recently widowed and is being forced to downsize into a more convenient apartment by his daughter (Marcia Gay Harden). He is still grieving and a little bitter. Elsa (Shirley MacLaine) is a lively 76 year old single woman, who doesn't believe in wasting a minute of time. She is immediately taken with Fred and slowly tries to drag him out of his funk. Of course, she has some baggage of her own but chooses to live a happy and carefree life while dreaming of one day re-creating the Trevi Fountain scene from La Dolce Vita, her favorite movie. She and Fred slowly fall for each other. Will she get a chance to fulfill her biggest dream or will life get in their way?
The cast is stellar, also including Chris Noth, Scott Bakula and James Brolin. Most of the little twists are easy to see coming but the performances of the two leads makes this movie worth watching. You can't help but root for Elsa & Fred. Catch the matinee for sure!
