Tom Cruise plays William Cage, a soldier in name only who is forced onto the battlefield to help fight the mimics - aliens who have invaded earth. Having been in PR and not fight training, he is immediately killed, but his blood is mixed with the blood of an alpha mimic that dies near him and this regenerates him back to life as if this episode had never happened. Thus goes the movie. Just like an action packed video game. Tom meets Rita, the Angel of Verdun, (Emily Blunt) who has faced this same situation. Together, they train, head into battle to try to stop the mimics, die and then wake up to fight again. Almost like Groundhog Day but with much more on the line.
This movie is action-packed with plenty of wit. Even though Tom and Emily are re-living the same battle over and over, it never feels boring or dull. It is very creative and should satisfy anyone looking for a unique summer blockbuster. My only complaint is that there is very little chance for the characters to develop. You see Tom Cruise go from PR person to professional soldier but you don't know much else about him. Emily Blunt is already a trained soldier and again we learn only small things about her. I would have liked a little more time for chemistry to develop between the leads but there just wasn't time devoted to that. Overall, the movie is entertaining and different than a lot of the other action movies out now.
