Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is a geeky, smart kid living in a terrible neighborhood in Inglewood. He and his two best friends Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) are fans of 90's hip hop and Malcolm even has the flat top to prove it. They have their own band and they spend their days actually going to school, prepping for the SAT and trying to avoid the bad influences in their neighborhood. Malcolm hopes to attend Harvard upon graduation. One night, they are prodded to attend a "hot" underground party. Things go from bad to worse when a drug deal falls apart and the drugs are stashed in Malcolm's backpack. Now, Malcolm and his friends are being pursued by drug dealers. Will they be able to return the drugs to their rightful owner and walk away unscathed?

I thought this movie was going to be better. It was almost like two different movies. The cute, geeky kids trying to get an education and do the right thing in a rough neighborhood. Which then turns into something darker and a little disturbing. The language is terrible and there are drugs flying everywhere. The message from the movie is something like, when you accidentally find drugs in your backpack, turn into a drug kingpin and get into Harvard. Not a good message or very realistic either. Anyway, parts of it are cute and funny and then it just gets dark and unentertaining. We were probably not the target demographic for this movie, but I would say skip it and see something like Spy or Jurassic World.
