Jill's Review

Opens August 5, 2016

Runs 92 minutes

This movie follows a group of friends who are members of the fictional improv group The Commune. They perform together at a small theater and all hope to make it big - maybe even make it to Weekend Live, the ultimate forum for comedians. Mike Birbiglia, Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tammy Sagher and Chris Gethard are all friends. They have been together for quite a while. When one of them ultimately makes it to Weekend Live, the impact on the group is difficult to absorb. Relationships are fractured and friendships are tested. Everyone is forced to face their future head-on and some of them may not make it to the big time afterall.

This was a serious comedy. Everyone was funny but the film depicted the serious side of comedy and what it takes to really make it to the top. It takes a lot of work. I thought it was an interesting look at the "behind the scenes" of an improv troupe. The Weekend Live of the movie was a stand-in for SNL. I can only imagine how hard it is to get a spot on SNL. Anyway, if you are a fan of improv, then this is the film for you. The Husband and I are not super into improv but we still found the film entertaining. It just wasn't extremely funny. It did make you laugh but it also hit a few nerves. Still worth seeing.
