It's 1967 and a police raid in Detroit leads to rebellion and riots in the street. With a curfew in place, there is still plenty of looting and other rioting going on. At the nearby Algiers Hotel, a group of people are talking, listening to music and just hanging out when an incident leads the police to their door. Soon, three young people are dead and several othes are injured, including two young white women. Unfortunately, it is the police who overstep their bounds. Based on actual events, this is the story of one of the largest Race riots in United States history and the unfortunate fallout from these events.

This is a timely and intense film. It is directed by Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) and she knows how to create tension. The victims in this film were just having a nice time. They did do a stupid thing which escalated all of the events of that evening. Then, the racist cops took over and everything went bad. John Boyega as security guard Dismukes, Algee Smith as Larry (a member of a singing group and just at the wrong place at the wrong time) and Anthony Mackie as Greene, a former Vietnam Vet are all standouts in a large cast with no superstar. This film will leave you a little mad and drained. It is a little known story in the history of race relations in the United States. Hopefully, it will open some eyes and not cause further distress. A very good film. Go see it.
