Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal) is an investment banker married to Julia (Heather Lind). Julia is the daughter of Davis' boss Phil (Chris Cooper) and together they appear to have a great life. When Julia is suddenly killed in a car accident, Davis' world falls apart. He feels numb and distant from the whole situation - like he never really knew Julia that well at all. He begins an unlikely pen pal sort of relationship with a customer service rep at a vending machine company when he writes to complain about not getting the candy that he paid for. Customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) takes pity on Davis and eventually they meet in person. As Davis begins to try to take apart pieces of his life, he also forms a bond with Karen's son Chris (Judah Lewis). Together, they destroy bits and bits of Davis' old life with the hope that Davis can get back in touch with himself and rebuild a new life.
This was a pretty good movie. But overall, it was a little cold. Jake does a good job as the emotionally detached widower, but everytime he destroyed something (especially his house) all I could think about was how much that was going to cost. All of the characters are good. I thought they pushed the envelope a little with the son and his sexual orientation. It seemed to veer a little from the actual plot of the movie. Still, I liked the movie and I thought everyone did a good job. So, go see it!
