A reporter and documentarian (Laura Poitras) receives anonymous emails from "CITIZENFOUR" who claims to have evidence of illegal surveillance being conducted by the NSA. Eventually, she and fellow reporters Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill fly to Hong Kong to meet with the source only to learn that it is Edward Snowden. Throughout the next several days they meet and interview Edward as he reveals what he has discovered and becomes increasingly nervous about the outcome of the interviews. The rest is history.
This documentary is a favorite of the critics. I think the popularity stems more from the content and what has been learned about the NSA rather than any riveting performance. The movie is pretty straightforward and a little dull. I'm not a big Edward Snowden fan so I may be a little more harsh than others about this movie. It is interesting and historical so you should see it for those reasons, not because it is riveting filmmaking.
