Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) is a young woman who works in a department store but dreams of a more fulfilling future. Carol (Cate Blanchette) is a married Mother who feels trapped in her loveless marriage. When Carol spots Therese at the store counter, there is an immediate attraction. But, in 1950's New York, an unconventional love like theirs in deeply frowned upon. Will Carol and Therese break free from the constraints that keep them apart or are they doomed to spend their lives as convention would dictate?

Cate Blanchette and Rooney Mara both give star performances. But, I never really felt connected to this film or their relationship. It all felt just a little too cool. After all, Carol is a married woman, even if she is attempting to get a divorce. There is a child involved and it seems that she acts just a little reckless. Rooney Mara plays the naive waif and does a good job but she seems just a little too aloof or something. Anyway, not my favorite movie but some great individual performances. If you ike Cate Blanchette or Rooney Mara, then go see it.
