It is summer in the countryside of Northern Italy in 1983. Oliver (Armie Hammer) has just arrived to spend the summer with Mr. Perlman (Michael Sturburg) and his family. He is Mr. Perlman's grad student working on a project in Art History. Young Elio (Timothée Chalamet) is soon very taken with Oliver, who is handsome and confident. He shows him around town, they ride bikes and swim in the river. Soon, a romance blossoms. But, summer must come to an end and the first hearbreak of young Elio's life is right around the corner.

First of all, this movie will not be for everyone. It is defintely a coming of age film about a young man first experiencing gay love. It can be uncomfortable at times. However, it is handled with care. The acting is tremendous. Armie Hammer is a revelation in his 1980's short shorts, dancing with abandon. And, Timothée Chalamet is just amazing as the young teen who falls for his Dad's summer grad student. However, I do have a major complaint. With Hollywood on fire for people even making an inappropriate comment to someone, let alone having sex with someone underage, I find it interesting that no one is mentioning that this movie is about a teenager falling for and having a sexual relationship with a man in his 20's. No hypocrisy there. Anyway, the film captures summer love in the country in the 1980's with perfection. Great acting and story-telling. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good art film.
