Jill's Review

Opens November 20, 2015

Runs 132 minutes

It is the 1970's and Roland (Brad Pitt) and Vanessa (Angelina Jolie-Pitt) are facing a crisis in their marraige. Roland has writer's block and Vanessa, a former dancer, is adrift and unhappy. They decide to take a trip and decamp at a beautiful, seaside town. There, Roland hopes to be able to write again and Vanessa hopes to rekindle their marriage. When a young, newly-wed couple, Lea (Mélanie Laurent) and Francois (Melvil Poupaud) take the room next door, Roland and Vanessa become a little enamored with them. Will they be able to rekindle their love or will this stop be the final straw in their marriage?

Ok. I kinda liked this movie. It is very arty. Everyone looks great and the scenery is terrific. Watching the film does feel voyeuristic. I think that was the intent because it matches a major plot point in the film. I don't want to give too much away. It does take until the bitter end of the film to find out what caused such a rift in Roland and Vanessa's marriage in the first place. The film could have been a little shorter. Not much happens. Everyone just looks good in the beautiful scenery. But, it keeps you interested and there is a sly wit about the whole film. You know you are watching Brad and Angelina. You feel a little weird but you can't look away. Worth a look if you like serious art films.
