Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) Is an Irish girl with little future in Ireland. Her sister Rose (Fiona Glascott) saves up her money and with the help of a Brooklyn priest, Father Flood (Jim Broadbent), she is able to send Eilis to America, the land of opportunity. When she first lands in Brooklyn, she misses her Mother and sister so much it is difficult to function. But, she gradually emerges from her shell. When she meets Tony (Emory Cohen), she quickly falls for this young, Italian lad. She begins to love her new American life with Tony in it. Then, a tragedy sends her back to Ireland to face her past. Now she is forced to choose between her birthplace and a possible love interest in Ireland or her new life in America. Will she have the courage to return?

This is a sweet and tender film. Saoirse is great as the young Irish girl who isn't sure that she will be happy in America leaving her family behind. As she says, "I just want to be an Irish girl in Ireland". But she knows that there is more opportunity in America and she forges ahead. Saoirse is so expressive and watchable. She makes the film. It is nice to see a film that small and quiet. There are no car chases or explosions. Just great characters and an interesting look at what it must have been like to emigrate to America. And, it is romantic and charming. Definitely worth seeing. Go see it!
