This movie follows Mason (Ellar Coltrane) for 12 years as he grows up before our eyes. In a feat of moviemaking genius, the director (Richard Linklater) films the same cast (also including Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and Lorelei Linklater) for a few days every year and links the story together to form a very compelling movie. All of the characters age together and it is really incredible to watch. We see Mason start out as a cute little boy and end up as he heads off to college. Along the way, he deals with his parent's divorce, remarriages and step parents, birthdays and graduation. It is an intimate look into a young man's life.
I thought this was a very interesting movie. It is very long although it is never boring. There is no real plot, just the 12 years of this young man growing up. Sometimes, it was a little weird because it felt almost like a documentary but then you would remember that these weren't his real parents and some of the things he did were scripted for the movie. But, overall it was a ground-breaking idea to film these same characters over the 12 years. I liked it and I would recommend that you see it. There won't be another one like this for a long time.
