Runs 119 minutes
Michael Keaton is Riggan, a washed up actor who used to portray an iconic superhero, Birdman. He is attempting to regenerate his career by directing and acting in a Broadway play. Things are not so great on the set. His lawyer, Jake (Zach Galifianakis) is pressuring him because they are running short on funds and one of the actors has to be replaced at the last minute. Mike Shiner (Edward Norton) is brought in to give the play a boost, but he has a huge ego and clashes with Riggan. Sam (Emma Stone), Riggan's daughter and his assistant is fresh out of rehab and trying to find her footing. And, the specter of the Birdman haunts Riggan in everything he does. Will the play make it to opening night or crash and burn and take down everyone with it?
This is another of my favorites this year. Michael Keeton should be nominated for an Oscar for his brave performance. Some people might be put off by the fact that Riggan is haunted by the voice of Birdman in his head (and sometimes in the flesh). But, it all kind of makes sense by the end of the film. It is a darkly funny film with great performances all around. I say go see it!!
