Noni (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is a young superstar singer quickly gaining international fame. Her mother Macy (Minnie Driver) can see that all of their dreams are about to come true, but Noni is beginning to feel that things are spiralling out of control. One night, she finds herself alone on her hotel balcony and just wants all of the pushing and pulling to end. Her police protection, Kaz (Nate Parker) lets her mother into the suite in the nick of time and he is able to rescue her before she falls to her death. Of course, the press must be led to believe that this was just an accident and Kaz is a hero. He is not happy about that but he has aspirations of his own, involving running for political office, and he agrees to go along with it. Of course, against everyone's advice, they begin a romance. With Kaz by her side will she be able to break free from her mother and face fame on her own terms? Or will fame come between them?
I thought this was a pretty good movie. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker are both attractive and their performances are really good. You really can't take your eyes off of them. Minnie Driver is good, too. The Husband actually thought is was better than he had anticipated. Trainer Joe thought is was ok for a chick flick. He did get a kick out of the occasional audience reactions to Nate Parker removing his shirt or some other sexy scene. Special shout out to CP who was having hot flashes in the lobby after the movie. She loved it! We got a kick out of her (and found out that she was one of the girls swooning during the film!! - Ha!). Anyway, not bad for a date movie.
