This movie is based on the life and times of Tupac Shakur (Demetrius Shipp, Jr.). It follows Tupac's life from his Black Panther Mother Afeni (Danai Gurira), her pregnancy while incarcerated and her activist and itinerant lifestyle that moved Tupac from a stable neighborhood and school to the harsh streets of LA. Against all odds, he became a famous rapper and actor. But, he was also controversial, signing with Suge Knight (Dominic L. Santana) and becoming part of the East Coast/West Coast rivalry that eventually lead to his early death at the age of only 25.

This movie is interesting but it is too long. I thought Straight Outta Compton was a much better film, covering a similar time period. Tupac was obviously very talented. It is eerie how much Demetrius Shipp  looks like Tupac. I guess I am not familiar enough with the rap world to really enjoy this movie. There were characters that took me a while to figure out who they were supposed to be. I just don't follow rap that closely. Jada Pinkett Smith (Kat Graham) was an early friend of Tupac's. She is depicted in the film but apparently, she feels that the portrayal is not accurate. Who knows? Anyway, the one takeaway is that a very talented rapper/actor was lost to a senseless feud. It is a shame because it seems that Tupac was just on his way to accomplishing his dreams. Not bad. If you are a fan of Tupac, then you should see this. Otherwise, you might be left just a little cool like me.
