Jill's Review

Runs 78 minutes

This is a documentary about the power of music to restore memory and awareness to dementia and other cognitively impaired patients. The movie follows Dan Cohen, a social worker and Founder of the non-profit organization Music & Memory, as he visits nursing homes and supplies IPods and music to the patients. There are miraculous results as the patients respond to the music of their past and are able to relate to those around them once again. The movie also delves into the healthcare system and how patients are treated with medication instead of more individualized treatments. With interviews by various leading doctors and researchers of elder care, this is quite an enlightening look at aging and memory.

This is an eye-opening movie about the power of music. Some of the patients in this documentary were basically comatose until Dan slipped a pair of headphones over their ears. Patients were able to answer questions. Some became calm, some danced and some responded for the first time in months. The music definitely caused a response in the patients shown in the film. It was very illuminating and is definitely worth a look, especially if you have an aging parent or grandparent with dementia.
