Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) is a travel writer and has traveled to all kinds of beautiful places and lived abroad for many years. Now that he is happily living in the United States with his wife, kids and grandkids, he realizes that he has never really traveled anywhere significant in his home country. One day he decides that he must hike all 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail. His wife Catherine (Emma Thompson) absolutely forbids him to go alone. There are bears and murders and all kinds of danger. Bill sets out to find someone to hike with him. That is easier said than done. However, an old friend Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte) says he is up to the trip. Little does Bill know that Katz is really just one step ahead of the law, hoping to sneak out of paying some of the debts he owes and hoping to have just one last adventure. Together they head out to beat the odds, hike the Appalachian Trail and hope to have the adventure of a lifetime.

This movie is based on the novel Bill Bryson wrote about this hiking adventure. It is actually very funny and entertaining. Nick Nolte is hilarious (although I was concerned for him throughout the movie because he was not in any shape to be hiking!). I guess that just made it even funnier. These guys had a great rapport and some of the people they met along the way were pretty humorous. And, the scenery was just spectacular. It really made you think about taking this hike for yourself just to see this pristine wilderness. Anyway, the movie is funny and touching. Definitely worth the price of admission. Go see it!
