Marianne Lane (Tilda Swinton) is a famous Rock Star recovering from vocal chord surgery. She and her boyfriend Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) are vacationing on the beautiful, remote Italian island Pantelleria, basking in the sun and just enjoying each other's company while resting her voice. Everything is turned upside down when Marianne's former lover Harry (Ralph Fiennes) and his daughter Penelope (Dakota Johnson) show up out of the blue. Old resentments begin to surface, secrets are revealed and loyalties are tested. Tension builds as a sand storm looms on the horizon. Ultimately, this vacation turns tragic for all involved.

I actually liked this movie. Everyone is great but Tilda Swinton steals the show. She must act the entire movie using only facial expressions or whispered lines. And, she is fantastic. Ralph Fiennes is pretty good, too. This is the most boisterous role I have ever seen him in - he is manic and loud and naked, a lot. In fact, everyone gets naked at some point. There is equal opportunity nudity. But, the story is pretty engrossing, Slowly, the past is revealed and various secrets are shared. You can feel the tension but you aren't really sure where everything is headed. I felt a little let down with the ending. Not sure what else I would have preferred. Overall, this movie was entertaining, a little funny, then a little dark. The acting was terrific. If you like indie films with great actors, then this is for you. Go see it.
