Runs 92 minutes

This is the story of Ramona/Ray (Elle Fanning), who lives with her lesbian grandmother Dodo (Susan Sarandon), her grandmother's girlfriend Honey (Linda Emond) and her mother Dolly (Naomi Watts) under one roof in New York City. The tension comes from the fact that Ramona feels that she is a boy born in a girl's body and wants to transition to "Ray". The only problem is that she needs both parent's consent to start the testosterone treatments. And, Dolly hasn't stayed in contact with Ramona's father. She is also very conflicted about whether to give her consent or not. The three generations of women must come together to support "Ray" as Dolly attempts to connect with Ramona's father Craig (Tate Donovan) and come to terms with the fact that she is losing a daughter and gaining a son.

Ok. This was a disturbing movie on all fronts. Elle Fanning does a tremendous job. She is a fantastic actress. But, the movie fails to address all of the issues in Ramona's life that probably screwed her up to begin with. **SPOILER** She has lesbian grandmothers. Her mother listed one man on Ramona's birth certificate but it turns out that his brother is actually Ramona's father. Her mother was never married. Her whole life is one non-traditional mess. But, no big deal. Even though she is only 16, they think it is fine for her to take testosterone, grow hair everywhere and have surgery. Hope she doesn't change her mind when she gets older. Anyway, the acting is good and the movie is well-made. Just frustrating. Very current but a sad view of the times in which we live. Skip it.
