Dorothea (Annette Bening) is a single Mom to Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann). She had him later in life (at 40) and is concerned that she is not providing all of the life lessons that he needs. She encourages one of her boarders Abbie (Greta Gerwig) who is recovering from cervical cancer and Julie (Elle Fanning), a sweet but promiscuous friend of Jamie's to reach out to him and help her teach Jamie the ways of the world. He feels that his Mother never really talks to him and he floats about in a sea of women. But, he also enjoys their company and in the end maybe they did provide some guidance in the ways of men and women afterall.

I thought this movie was good. It was probably a little better than I expected it to be. It was funny and touching. There was way too much smoking. I felt like coughing just watching the movie, but that was an accurate depiction of the time period, I guess. The kid who played Jamie did a really nice job navigating his coming-of-age story surrounded by a sea of women. Annette Bening was fabulous. It has been a long time since I have seen her play such a rich, but slightly flawed character. Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig were both great, too (Greta's hair drove me crazy, though). This was more a slice of life kind of film. It was a bohemian time and things were much more relaxed than today. If you are a fan of Annette Bening, then this is a must see. Otherwise, it is pretty good and worth a look.
